In a job that lasts months, keeping the whole text until the end means keeping the feedback until the end too. Interim deliveries let the client see the text early and the remaining sections be carried out in line with that feedback. Even so, this method brings with it the risk of version confusion.
The purpose of interim delivery
The client sees the text early and the feedback is applied to the remaining sections. This prevents bulk correction at the end. The method is preferred in long jobs.
Planning the stages
Which sections will be delivered when is written down at the outset. Random interim delivery keeps the client busy. A plan is made.
Integrity of sections
Interim deliveries are made at meaningful section boundaries. Half a section cannot be assessed. The boundaries are observed.
Notice that it is not final
Sections delivered on an interim basis do not count as final, and this is stated in writing. The review steps may not yet be complete. The status is written explicitly.
Version marking
Every interim delivery carries a version number and a date. Unmarked files get mixed up on the client side. The rule is applied.
File naming
Interim delivery files are named according to the defined convention. Files sent under the same name overwrite one another. The arrangement is kept.
Feedback window
How soon the client will give feedback is agreed. Open-ended waiting upsets the plan. The period is written down.
Applying the feedback
The corrections received are applied both to the section concerned and to the remaining sections. Applying them to that section alone produces inconsistency. A scan is carried out.
Updating term decisions
The term preferences that emerge from feedback are entered in the list. If the list is not updated, the same correction comes back again. A record is kept.
Retrospective correction
Earlier interim deliveries are updated too if necessary and sent again. No old version should remain with the client. Notice is given.
Summaries of changes
In files that are sent again, what has changed is stated briefly. A file without a summary has to be read all over again. The summary is added.
The risk of dispersal on the client side
If interim deliveries reach different people, a fragmented picture forms. A single contact person is designated. Distribution is done in a controlled manner.
Relationship with final delivery
Interim deliveries do not take the place of final delivery, and the final file is given as a whole. This distinction is written down. Confusion is avoided.
Timing of the review steps
In interim deliveries review may not be complete, and this is stated. If it is complete, that is written separately. Transparency is kept.
Use in rush jobs
When time is tight, interim delivery gives the client the chance to start early. This can make up for a delay. The option is offered.
Balancing the extra load
Every interim delivery brings a preparation and communication load. Their number is not kept higher than necessary. A balance is struck.
Delivery record
Which section was delivered when is recorded. The record answers questions that come up later. Order is maintained.
The next step
While interim deliveries continue, translator's notes accumulate and are prepared for the delivery package. The two jobs run in parallel. The order is flexible.
